One of the questions I hear is, "how is coaching different than therapy?" Here are 5 areas in which coaching and therapy are different:
1. Focus and Orientation:
Coaching is primarily future-oriented and action-focused. As a coach, I work with clients to set and achieve specific goals, focusing on personal or professional development.
Therapy often delves into the past to explore trauma, emotions, experiences, and mental health issues. Therapy aims to understand and address psychological and emotional challenges.
2. Nature of the Relationship:
Coaching is a collaborative partnership where we will work together to identify and overcome challenges. Our coach-client relationship will be supportive and goal-driven.
Therapy typically involves a relationship where the therapist provides empathy and guidance to help clients gain insight into their emotions and behaviours.
3. Scope of Issues Addressed:
Coaching addresses a wide range of personal and professional goals, such as career development, leadership skills, time management, and achieving a work-life balance.
Therapy focuses on diagnosing and treating mental health issues, emotional difficulties, and interpersonal challenges, including conditions like anxiety, depression, and trauma.
4. Time Orientation:
Coaching emphasizes the present and future. I help clients set and achieve short-term and long-term goals, focusing on actionable steps, accountability, and forward progress.
Therapy often explores the past to understand the root causes of current challenges. Therapy sessions can involve a longer-term commitment to explore and address deep-seated issues.
5. Role of the Practitioner:
Coaching positions the coach in a role similar to a mentor or guide, providing support, encouragement, and accountability. I assist my clients in identifying strengths and developing strategies for success.
Therapy positions the therapist as a mental health professional, employing various therapeutic techniques to help clients explore emotions, gain self-awareness, and navigate psychological challenges.
I am a coach. I am not a therapist. It's important to note that while coaching and therapy have distinct differences, there can be overlap in certain techniques and approaches. Additionally, individuals may choose to engage in both coaching and therapy at different times in their lives, depending on their needs and goals. The decision between coaching and therapy often depends on the specific issues or challenges an individual is facing.
